Flagstones are large, flat thin pieces of stone ranging from two feet to as much as five feet in diameter. They are used for walks and patios. Flagstone averages 1”-2” in thickness depending on the quarry producing the material.
All irregular flagstones are 1” to 3” in thickness and somewhat flat for paving walks, patios and in more elaborate applications, driveways. They are generally fine-grained granite, sandstone, limestone, bluestone, quartzite or slate. These stones may be irregular or in certain cases, patterned, which means they have been cut into squares or rectangles to be laid in a predetermined pattern. Laying irregular stone is like doing a jigsaw puzzle, making the pieces fit as you go. All irregular flagstones are crated or on pallets. The stones may be laid dry in compacted crushed limestone with sand as the leveling agent, or wet laid on concrete in cement.
Steppers are small pieces of Flagstone; normally about the size of a human foot. They range from 12”-24” in size. Steppers average 1”-2” in thickness depending on the quarry producing the materials.
